Wilmslow, Chester & Dublin

Wilmslow, United Kingdom
Wilmslow- Another fantastic Air B&B with ensuite facilities and a super comfy bed. The hosts suggested the excellent Italian restaurant where I had a great pizza- asparagus, zucchini, pepperoni & ham. Across the street I viewed the high priced autos at Aston Martin. Saturday I decided not to visit the old Quaker Burial ground where an ancestor or more were buried 400+ years ago. Diane and I attempted to find this from a different direction a number of years ago. It would have been a 15 minute (or more) walk from a bus stop with maybe no shoulder on the road to walk. I went to Quarry Bank Mill Museum and really enjoyed the tour and gardens. In the Apprentice house 60 young girls were housed in one room and 30 boys in another. They worked 12 hour days. The neighboring village of Styal and Manchester airport is where ancestors lived in the 1600's, before the mill and other buildings. I picked up a few food souvenirs at the local grocery store. A few buildings away is a school that is hosting a Halloween party for kids. Staff at the restaurant were also dressed up. Yes Marnie, I visited another library-- larger than Lakes Country and no public restroom. There was a Christmas card etc. sale going on.

Sunday I took two trains to Chester (1 .25 hour trip). I rode the last Hop On city tour bus of the season and it broke down at stop 2. While another woman and I waited for the other bus the guide told us about some hidden gems of the downtown- a wine bar and tearoom housed in old 14th century buildings with undercrofts for storage. The tearoom left some of the original wattle and daub exposed when they restored the building. Browsing shops on the "Rows" (second story shops) was fun. Chester has the most intact city wall. And Christmas decorations have been installed. The tour bus drove past Telford's Warehouse where my niece worked years ago when she went to school in Chester. I opted to eat in the center of town and had a huge Yorkshire pudding and roast at Katie's. Chester had some beautiful buildings, a nice Cathedral and some Dutch architecture.
After I told B&B hosts Paula and Marcus about my activities and failure to go to the cemetery they offered to take me there-- in the foggy dark. What an adventure-- Sat Nav directed us wrong. Marcus had to backup on some of the single lane road . We did eventually find the sign for Graveyard Farm but couldn't determine where the old cemetery was. They said that they would return in daylight and send me photos.

I am now at the Manchester airport waiting for my flight to Dublin and then to O'Hare. It is a foggy morning and there have been some delays.

Favorites of the trip:
Accommodations- Air B&B in Wilmslow-- wonderful bed and ensuite facilities
Day- Visiting Dunstaple Farm and churches and cemeteries of the Holsworthy area with JoJo Martin
Drink- local brewed ciders
Food- Dunstaple Farm Ice Cream and the Asparagus, zucchini, pepperoni and ham pizza
Vistas- too many beautiful sights to chose a favorite, but maybe the countryside around Holsworthy (because my ancestors lived there)
Traveline app and google maps to direct me how to get to places. I picked up some train schedules and would have had a terrible time trying to figure out connections. I don't know how my Mom travelled as much as she did.

Two days later.... The delayed flight to Dublin caused me to miss the flight to Chicago on Monday night. I was excited about getting a bonus night in Dublin. Sadly I ended up spending probably 4 hours in the line to get new tickets and then to be transported to the hotel 30 minutes away. I did get a nice meal at 9:30. Slept a couple hours and the desk called my room at 3:45 to say that there would be a bus there to take me to the airport at 7:00. This flight went through New York. Marnie and Chris picked me up in Milwaukee at the Coach USA bus terminal. I spent the night at Leslie & Curt's house. I am now home.

Pam, I've just taken the time to read your blog now. What a wonderful trip! So much to see in just a small area.
