Off we go!

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States
Our first group of volunteers for 2013 was a group of students from Assumption College in Woosta, Mass. They qualify as boomerangers since they worked with us last year. Only Nick came with them last year. They worked on Appie Jones house with DeWayne as their site supervisor. This year, they were a group of 14. Amy was the adult supervision, Nick and Pete were the only two guys in the group and the rest were bubbly, happy and enthusiastic young women. I worked mostly with Nick, who installed the kitchen cabinets at Colvin's house. Becca was the shelving specialist. Mary did caulking and staining the front door and Rachel ran base and made the shutters for the front of the house. The rest of the group worked on sonya Moore's house. I saw her today and she has moved in! Evidently, there will be a 7th St. East block dedication instead of one by one. One of Assumption's professors, Mike Land, came with the group and we were invited for a feast at his parents home one evening. They are long time Tuscaloosa residents and his Mom used to serve on Habitat's Board of Directors. We shared a beautiful meal, the hightlight of which was the desert. (See Picture). It was kind of an ice cream sandwhich lasagna with layers of ice cream sandwhiches with whipped cream in between lace with a "secret ingredient" that we had to guess. Soem type of liqueur. I haven't had any alcoholic beverages since 1977, but before that, I used to like an occasional Kahlua and cream. So, after all those years, the correct guess of Kahlua popped out of my mouth. It was very good.
During the past week, too, Nick helped me pull the wires, along with Sam our electrician, for our six new RV Hook ups . Just in the nick of time too. We have three Rv's arriving today to work with us for the RV Caravanners/Habitat international website.
On Friday, all construction staff went up to Birmingham for the day to work with Johnie Roberts and do a little team building. Met Chris Cosby, one of their site supervisors, who has done 4 of the Fuller Center Bike Trips. Toured the Re-store there. It is massive. Looks like a Walmart, with big selctions of flooring and tile, tools, furniture, kitchen cabinets, etc. Johnie has been working with Habitat for over 25 years, the last 12 in Birmingham. I met him in Americus, Georgia many years ago at the Easter Morning Build. 20 homes in a week.
Settled into the Lion's Den now. Met first RVers as Camp Ambassodor. Invited them in for coffee. Habicat (my cat) is enjoying the new found freedom with her new cat door. Bunch of little details yet to do but, in time. That's all for this week. Ciao. Peter
