A priest, a Rabbi, an Iman and a Pastor. . . . .

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States
. . . .walk onto a Habitat site.   No, it's not a joke. This past week we were graced with a visit of 14 students from Williams College in northern Massachusetts on their alternate spring break and the four adult leaders fit the title of today's blog. this is the second visit to Tuscaloosa for this group. Last year they worked on John and Pam Nero's home on 7th street. They were led in the construction that time by Pete DeWorken (who is no longer with us) but I rembember seeing Bilal (the Muslim cleric) and also Rick (the Presbyterian pastor). So, what did the group do this year? Well, they finished one house and then started another- they were that good! We finished Jackie Booker's house- all the final details (doves?) on her punchlist as well as the swell swail in the back yard that B arry the inspector wanted re-done. After finishing Jackie's, it was off to start Nickie's on Juanita Drive. We framed the floor and installed all of the plywood decking. Got rained out a bit on Friday, so I tried the old go-to-Krispy-Kreme-and drink coffee and eat donuts trick to make the rain stop but it didn't work, so it was early dismissal. The group had been staying at 1st Presbyterian and was joined by their great pastor, Charlie Durham, for some of the work and also the visit to KK. We attended a shabbot service at the local temple on friday night followed by the breaking of bread afterwards back at 1st Pres. They held an interfaith dialogue each evening. It was great to see people of different faiths making an attempt to find the common ground and also work together for a common good.
It's a good feeling to have completed the seventh house on seventh st . and now to have all of our efforts consolidated on Juanita Drive. The 40 or so Habitat signs of things to come there surely must give a great sense of hope for the future, at least on this one street in Alberta City (part of Tuscaloosa). We have four homes under way as we speak.
Frederick Maryland is back again after only a week away. They can't stay away. Jeanne Kozak and Chuck caught me in the act earlier today as I was doing layout on Nickie's house away from the din and people calling "Peter, Peter. . . ."  Gotta be ready and it's hard doing layout when there are volunteers around. good therapy for me too, though.
That's all for this week-    Peter
