Miraflores Sightseeing

Miraflores, Metropolitan Municipality of Lima, Peru
Woke up to see the sun coming up over the mountains.   So surprised; usually there is so much haze.
Enjoyed the breakfast buffet.
The Oceania girl from yesterday did not call us back. That meant more phone calls to Oceania this morning. Finally got to talk with a very helpful guy who got us seats on an American Airlines flight leaving at 7 am tomorrow morning; seats weren't together. Went on-line and paid to upgrade to exit aisle seats that were next to each other. So thankful being able to get a plane reservation. Spent most of the morning arranging everything.
                               MIRAFLORES SIGHTSEEING
Around noon, started along Larco, a wide main street lined with many shops.

Manolo's for churos--stuffed with chocolate, vanilla, and dulce de leche--plus chocolate dipping sauce.

If that wasn't enough, also elaborate ice cream sundaes and banana split. Churos very sweet; liked the ice cream best. Sugar overload; Randy's kind of lunch.

Kennedy Park, the central park in Miraflores, honors President Kennedy and the role that the Alliance for Progress played during mid-century Peru. Virgen Milagrosa Church, a Roman Catholic temple built in 1939, was closed. Nice spot with colorful flower beds and tall trees for sitting in the shade. Quite a bit of construction taking place.

Chabuca Granda amphitheater a nice place to sit and enjoy the sunny day.

About a mile's walk along Diagonal street, then Malecon 28 de Julio to the coast by the Cupid statue entrance to the Love Park.

Parque del Amor (Love Park) with beautiful flowers, stunning statues, and fabulous Pacific Ocean views. Unbelievable mosaic curvy wall goes all the way down to the ocean.

“El Beso” (The Kiss) is the very famous sculpture. Benches surrounding it are covered in colorful mosaic murals with love-related phrases and poems--reminiscent of Parc Guel (Gaudy's) in Barcelona.
Malecón is the scenic cliff top walkway overlooking the Pacific Ocean dotted with sculptures, benches, parks.
Across the bridge a park covered in flowers and a massive cement sculpture called Intihuatana. The Peruvian artist Fernando de Szyszlo "It is this place where the sun is held for the Quechua world. Lima, having a sky so gray, also needs an Intihuatana for the magical purpose of holding the sun."

Continuing along the walk: Views from high above Rosa Nautica's location is truly amazing. Thought it was a unique place the night we ate there; appreciate its uniqueness even more from up here.

Park San Marcelino Champagnat, a priest who saw God at the center of life and the Virgin Mary as a sure means of attracting people to God.
Surfers, hand gliders--a delightful walk. MUST DO in Miraflores.

Yea, back to the Marriott. Headed right to the lounge for a cold drink; gets pretty hot in the afternoons.

Finally, Oceania canceled the cruise; probably because the ports are all closed. So glad our flight out is already arranged. Many people here are scrambling to find a flight.
Relaxed in the room enjoying the views; haze cleared enough to see the islands in the distance.
Reservations for dinner at Punta Azul, which is in an old colonial home. Nice walk along one of the side streets; lots of interesting trees, architecture & doorways on houses. Table on second floor next to window to balcony. Starters: Scallops on shells with cheese, Fried Shrimp (these 2 were the best); Cevechi of shrimp fish, octupus, calamari in tiger sauce very good (portion in soup bowl too large). Two entres: Lobster in sauce and Lomo Saldata. Great food. Fun to share and try everything, which is what we did at every meal.

The waiters in all the restaurants in Lima and Miraflores spoke very good English. Not so much with the CMV and Uber drivers, some didn't speak any English.
Throughout the city, we are amazed at the crazy wiring on the street poles.
Nice walk back to the hotel looking at the colonial architecture and looking in the shops.
Barb & Keith flew out at 10 tonight so they left around 8. Sure was fun traveling together. After saying good bye, we hit the sack early since we need to leave the hotel around 3 am.
Can see the city lights along coast and up the mountain from the bed. Didn't want to close my eyes. A beautiful sight seeing the distant Cross shine brightly reflecting in the water.
