Exploring Tribune Bay’s
Sandstone – Aug 4/5, 2001
Back at Tribune Bay
Either we are earlier
or everyone is still on the weekly farmers market, we found the perfect parking
spot. Set up on the beach and after a quick cool down we needed after our long
walk we went to explore:
The Art of Sandstone
formations
From the sandy beach
to the sandstone flats with super cool rocks on them: lots of amazing photo
opportunities with the tropic background feel, it was super cool, at one point
Paul turned back and Gine ventured on until she came to the very tip – this is
so unique and so cool, no wonder so many people come back here year after year.
Swimming and Relaxing
After all that time it
is hard work time to relax in the hot sun – go for a swim – get dry and back in
the water again and each time we have to walk less to the water. A quick shade
break in the truck with Mandy and coffee… and back down at the beach: it is
also super cool to watch other people. I think we both had a lot of fun – Paul
said this is his favourite.
The tide chased us
away
And as we watched the
tide came closer and closer, until it was so close, that it was time to pack up
and leave – but then I may should mention that was a half hour after our
previously decided time to go…. Long sunny day. And to top it off we took a
nice cold shower (really cold) to wash off all the sand, but when it’s that
cold you are fast!!!
Tired at sunset
All that sun makes
tired, so when sunset was over we were so tired, that we decided an icecream
with views and than early to bed… because another amazing day will await us.
All good things are
three???
Or that is how the
saying goes, no the question is it a good thing if we go three days in a row to
the beach? Paul says it is perfect and Gine said: What is wrong with us, this
year we always go camping and are on a lake or ocean and do a bit paddle
boarding – where is the exploring and hiking??? And so we again go to Tribune
Bay, the perfect beach. Today with some clouds but it was still warm, the
parking lot was not as full and we set our chairs.
Walking in the ocean
and on the sandrocks
And then we started
out to walk in the water along the sandy beach – it’s so much fun and so
beautiful. Today the water looks different and is also more wavy. After nearly
at the other end Paul decided to turn around and Gine ventured on to walk on
the Sand stones, which look absolutely beautiful: Paul only laughed when Gine
said that she found a stone skull from a Giant, the stoned skin of a dinosaur
and some alien writing… and even better during exploring it the sun came out a
bit.
The time went fast
with talking, people watching, going in the water and another walk along the
beach – time to say good bye.
The little crawly sea slaters:
- Walking on the sand stones here little crawly creatures were running in all directions. So what are those? Sea slaters or sea roach or wood louse… (ok all not so appealing names)
- They live in rocky seashores, in sea creviches, rock pools and under stones normally 1-2 m above the high tide area
- They eat sea weed and debris – guess they are important for the eco system
- They breathe and actually drown in water
- \This California Sea slater can be found in some areas in BC like here on Hornby island
- \Maybe you can see if you are fast and look closly: they have 2 antennas (not to miss) and 7 pairs of limbs
- Birds and small crabs like to eat them
Clouds make the most
perfect sunset
You think the perfect
sunset when there are no clouds – nothing could be further from the truth, the
clouds lit up in the sky in yellow and reddish colors, it was so beautiful. And
the best thing is to have a nice icecream to it. That was a perfect last
evening on a perfect camping trip – we liked it so much, I hope at one time we
can come back to Hornby.
Mandy is the star on
the campsite
When we parked our
Camper we always drove in forward, so we could leave the door open for Mandy
and she could look out on the road watching people walk by and seeing the
ocean. As well we could sit along the ocean in the comfy chairs and have an eye
on her. And she was the star on the campsite, a lot of people stopped and
admired her and we started a lot of nice conversations. I think she really
enjoys it and she loves it to look outside.
Rain & clouds:
time to go home
This morning we woke
up and it was cloudy and cool – you know that means camping is over. So we
didn’t felt to bad that we had to go home. And we were super lucky when we
approached the ferry they were loading and took us on as the last vehicle, they
even moved a few cars so we could fit on. Then we had a short wait at Denman
and then were on the way home.
This time we emptied
the camper nearly completely as we don’t know when we go next time camping.
Really truck – is that
really necessary????
The last days we had a
bit a problem as the turbo didn’t kick in when we started up the truck in the
morning, which is kind of annoying. So it needs to be checked out. Good thing
we are on the lookout for a bit a heavier truck with higher payload…. Let’s
hope we can make it happen.
