Droitwich Cricket Club

Leamington Spa, England, United Kingdom
Today we head off in convoy to Droitwich Spa. Droitwich Spa (aka Droitwich) is a town in northern Worcestershire, on the River Salwarpe.   The town is situated on massive deposits of salt. In Roman times Droitwich was known as Salinae and the origins of salt extraction in the area go back to prehistoric times. The natural Droitwich brine contains 2½ lbs. of salt per gallon - ten times stronger than sea water and rivalled only by the Dead Sea

Today's game is against the Droitwich Spa Cricket Club . This is Martin Woodward's home club and will be the fourth time on this tour that the England Over 60s player will be fronting up against us. There are also a couple of other familiar faces in the line-up but as the games are all starting to meld together in my poor befuddled brain, I'm not sure which other games we saw them in.

Forty overs a side today, with retirement at 35 runs.   We bat first and get another good start despite loosing Jimmy for 19 and Ross for a third-ball duck.   We are 2/105 at the half way mark with Gill and John Dedman both retiring. However, we once again loose our momentum in the middle overs and only add a further 30 runs in the next 10 overs.   Its time to put the pedal to the metal.  Vinnie retires on 35no off 49 balls and Dennis makes 35no off 56 balls.   I make a brief cameo with only a couple of overs to go with 7 off 8 balls.   One nice cover drive for 4 then i smash the hell out of the ball towards midwicket only for Martin Woodward to get a hand down to it and save a certain four .   I step away from a shorter one next ball, trying to run it away through the vacant third man position only to miss it and see it hit the leg stump bail.   Yes, probably not the best shot selection.

Our final total of 3/200 is what we had hoped for at the start so after a good afternoon tea we head out into the field in good spirits.   Panda, after a cautious start, builds up his pace and produces two sensational deliveries to clean bowl one of the openers and also their number 3.   We are keeping things very tight and after 20 overs Droitwich are 4/65 and well behid the run-rate.   They never really get going and finish the game at 7/145.   I kept for the first 20 overs and probably had my neatest session of the tour so far but the bowlers don't get any nicks today.   I offered the gloves to Peter Howes for the second half as he didn't bat today.   I don't think I am being unfair to say that most people no longer consider him the number one keeper on tour. He misses several balls and generally looks untidy but he does get a stumping in the final over of the game - that's something he has still got over me !   I get to bowl one over at the death and get belted for a couple of boundaries as their number nine finally lashed out.   Might not bode well for any other chances to have a bowl on tour !!

Evening finishes with the usual......speeches, blah blah, presentations, blah blah, you know the drill by now. Oh, and a very nice Indian meal put on by the local club.
