A Passage to India

London, England, United Kingdom
Airport Transfer
As usual we travelled to the airport by minicab from Canon Cars. The journey to Heathrow Terminal 4 only took an hour since the traffic flowed freely. However, check-in was less speedy, taking just over an hour waiting in line, but we passed through security without queuing.

Leaving on a Jet Plane
Waiting at Gate 5 for our Jet Airways flight 9W121 to Delhi we managed to catch up with breaking news from London of further outbreaks of looting and civil disorder in Brixton and Peckham. The rioting followed disturbances on Saturday night in Tottenham, north London, after the shooting of Mark Duggan by Police Officers on Thursday. The unrest across the country looked set to continue into Monday night. There are reports on the TV news of up to 50 young men in ski masks and balaclavas on Rye Lane in Peckham and the Victoria Line between Stockwell and Brixton is suspended due to unrest.

Meanwhile on board the Jet Airways 777-200 we waited 45 minutes to be pushed back due to air traffic congestion. Eventually we taxied to our runway and took off a little after 21:30 hrs. The flight itself was uneventful apart from some slight turbulence. I managed to watch a movie, The Adjustment Bureau, with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. I couldn't help thinking that the Adjustment Bureau could have prevented the events leading up to the widespread and prolonged civil unrest and looting. Or should we just be better at writing our own plans? But London and England were now far away and my mind was on India which seemed all the more closer after a delicious vegetarian dinner of dal, rice, and spinach with chick peas.
