Cruise is over, but Genoa is a gem.

Genoa Port Terminal (Rebora), Liguria, Italy
We’re having a sumptuous dinner, the last dinner on board unfortunately.  Just a couple of hours ago we were in France and our menu tonight is all French. Bravely I’ve opted for the first time to try snails followed by crepes suzette. Off to our left through the floor to ceiling windows we can clearly see the coast and mountains of northern Italy. Yesterday, we were in Spain. Tomorrow when we wake up we will be back in Italy. This cruising is surreal, but also fabulously enjoyable.
As it’s the last night of our cruise, we’re sitting here reflecting on just how much we enjoyed the last seven days. The Seaview is a huge ship with a capacity of up to 5,000 passengers. This sounds a little daunting. However, we subscribed to a special Yacht Club category, equivalent to a private club on board where there are no more than 200 passengers sharing exclusive and extensive luxury facilities available only to members. We also have two butlers, and priority boarding and disembarkation rights. It has been described to us as a small luxury liner based in a much bigger one, and this is exactly how we’ve found it.
The week has gone so fast, we’ve been so busy with visits to five unique iconic locations in three different countries. It’s been a truly fabulous week. And it’s such a special experience to go to sleep after visiting one exciting port to wake the next morning in a different one, and in most cases, a different country. It definitely is the most comfortable and convenient way of travelling, no need to pack and unpack at each destination, no need to think about transport, accommodation or dining options. It’s all done for us and done very well too. We have both loved it and hope we may be able to try another cruise in the not-too-distant future.
We are now in Genoa. Thousands will disembark, but because of our priority status we were virtually first off the ship as we were assisted by our butler through the disembarkation process, collect our luggage and then find a taxi.

We were at our hotel by 8:30, and surprisingly in our room very soon thereafter. We received a very friendly warm welcome by reception staff and were happily informed our room was ready for occupation, when normally this wouldn’t be until 3 pm. Wow, what a difference this made. We could dump our luggage and get out there immediately to explore.

The friendly reception staff directed us on the important sightseeing, and we were soon strolling the extremely elegant boulevards, streets and laneways of the old city. Extraordinarily, Genoa has over 40 XVI and XVII century buildings heritage listed by UNESCO. And the ones we explored had despite their age been beautifully maintained.

The streets were busy, but not overcrowded and the colour and the historic nature of what we were seeing really appealed to us. We had a delicious typical Italian pasta lunch in a cute little bistro away in one of the darkest alleys. The bistro’s building was very old, with warning signs in its adjacent lane because of rendering and brickwork falling regularly from its upper sections.

Heavy rain forced us back to the hotel, but we had seen enough to rate Genoa as one of our top destinations.
