A day in Izmir

İzmir, İzmir, Turkey
Sunday dawned with the return of the little rental car that had served us so faithfully for three weeks, driving almost 4,000 kilometers (about 2,300 miles).  Then we headed to the bazaar, which is again more for the locals than tourists.  Unlike the Kuşadasi market, this bazaar is permanently situated in a maze of streets in the old town area.  This early on Sunday, many of the shops were not open, but we wandered on toward the waterfront and saw a few landmarks such as the Clock Tower.  More of the bazaar came alive in the meantime and by the time we wandered back through, it was bustling.  In addition to the plethora of elaborate wedding dress shops (which we have seen all over Turkey), this bazaar really concentrated on sultan and harem costumes for kids.  They were as elaborate as wedding gowns.  We also had a great doner lunch in the bazaar, went back and did some packing and paperwork at the hotel, and an early (and good) dinner in a lively district just off the waterfront.  We have to get up very early tomorrow to catch the train to Istanbul at 6:45 a.m.
