Paphos, Paphos, Cyprus
Leaving Larnaca today to head back to Paphos as we are leaving Cyprus tonight (8.45pm flight), and heading to Thessaloniki in Greece. Why Thessaloniki? It was a really cheap flight out of Paphos, and it also dovetailed nicely with getting back to our final destination, Paris.
On the way back to Paphos we took a small detour to visit the site of an ancient Amphitheater, Kourion. This archeological site dates back to the 2nd century BC. And very interesting it was too. We were reminded of another amphitheater we visited on our first trip - Epidavros in the Peloponnese area of Greece. It was there that we came across the incredible engineering prowess of the Greeks - a speaker stone set in the middle, upon which a speaker could be heard by every person in sitting in the theatre. We were keen to see if the same principle was applied here. Couldn't find any evidence of a speaker stone, but through a bit of trial and error it soon became apparent that there was a definite "sweet spot" from which a speaker could be heard by everyone.
Finished the side trip and headed on to Paphos. On the way we traversed the British zone, the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri, passing the British Military base, the Episkopi Garrison (or as our coffee friend in Nicosia says, "British Mafia").
Arrived back in Paphos late afternoon. Time enough for a final walk along the seafront, and a meal and drinks at one of the seafront restaurants. A perfect way to end our time in Cyprus. Like Malta and Tallinn before, we were totally taken with Cyprus. We were somewhat apprehensive when we realized that Cyprus was a country divided. But those apprehensions quickly disappeared. From Paphos to Limassol to Larnaca to Nicosia, Cyprus continually amazed and delighted us.
So, to the airport. Drop off the hire car, check in with Ryan Air (somewhat chaotic) and then relax for an hour until our flight to Thessaloniki. Luckily it's only a 2 hour flight.
Will catch up with you all when we are there.
