Lunch, endless walking, and churches....

Vilnius, Lithuania
We have been in Vilnius for a few days, and have walked many streets. We have enjoyed great coffee while we rested our feet. Have taken the funicular to the Upper Castle. Walked inside one of the most beautiful bookshops imaginable. We visited the harrowing Museum of the Genocide Victims and been very happy to be back outside in the sun. And today we drove to the outskirts of town and had a very good lunch. And we have seen churches. Many churches.

We have never seen so many churches in one place. When we overlooked the town from Castle Hill it became obvious just how many there are. As well as the churches the old town has so many Baroque styled buildings that the area has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Many are beautiful. I wondered how they maintain them all.

I tried to find something to photograph besides buildings, and only managed a mermaid and a fish shop. And of course lunch. Very important.

I had read about Vandens Malunas, a restaurant in an old mill building outside of town. It is set in the forest on a bend of the Neris River, a very pretty spot. It serves Lithuanian food in a lovely setting. I decided on Wine braised Rabbit with Mushrooms, while Bob had the Confit Duck. Both very good. Dessert was a surprise. I thought the Apples in Pastry with Poppy Seeds would be a pie type affair, but instead was presented with a plate of fritter like balls. Not what I expected. But it was a good lunch. A good finish to Vilnius, capital of Lithuania.
