Bergen in the rain

Bergen, Western Fjords, Norway
It was a rainy day in Bergen when we were there, but that did not stop the tourists. Because Bergen is a very touristy town. Cruise boats and bus tours come with groups as the town is easily accessible by sea but also a great starting point for tours to a number of the fjords.

Our B&B was just a bit uphill from the town centre. The house was built in 1896 and has been renovated and very well maintained since then, so very comfortable. The cobbled street also goes back a long way, and from here was a short walk downtown.

Bergen is situated on a harbour. Both sides of the bay have attractive buildings but it is the images of the Bryggen side that are well known as the 'face' of Bergen.  'Bryggen' is Norwegian for 'wharf', and the buildings on the eastern side of the harbour are old Hanseatic commercial buildings. The buildings now house mostly souvenir shops and eating places and even in the rain there were plenty of people around.

Further near town was the fish market, selling fresh seafood and also cooked food. We continue to be amazed at the cost of seafood here. That is what we thought would be a reasonable price here but that is not the case. We did later buy fish and chips for lunch at a place more away from the crowds and sat by the water to enjoy. It was just the sort of weather for that type of food.

spent many a lunch time eating prawns and fish and chips with our friends & beers for the boys at the market in Bergen and that was when I had my first taste of whale. Last comment for a couple of weeks while I soak up the sun in Tuscany, Look forward to lots more pictures and adventures when I get back.
