With the school term winding to an end I had an end of term party for my after school class. The class previous they had to make out invitations to each other and in the final class we had a party with snacks and played some english games
The Daegu School Board has also been running a weekly Global Festival to follow up to its highly successful weekend festival held last November (see previous entry http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/londone7/1/1353876608/tpod.html)
They were looking for teacher volunteers to manage a half day shift. We would get paid $100 for the shift although the event runs all day Saturday so there is a morning and afternoon shift. The program has been running for about 3-4 months.
So if you multiply the number of teachers doing shifts for both am/pm over a four month period getting paid $100 for each shift you wonder where all this money is coming from while Govt's back home are cutting so much??
I was assigned to work in the 'Western Culture' room at the fun fair games table. There was a mock horse derby race and students would roll a dice to move their horse. There were questions underneath each space they would move onto.
Dealing with Elementary kids was different as some were quite hyper and wanted to run all around the room touching and looking at everything. In other cases annoyingly they kept playing with the horses making 'neeyy' horse sounds
In another instance quite a young girl showed up with her partner. I asked the Korean helper how old she was and was told she was an kindergarten aged younger sister of the elementary school girl. Not sure what to do with them we moved them to the hoop tossing which would be more simpler
Students had a world map which they had to collect stickers for every room and activity they completed.
Some of the activities going on in the other rooms were an 'Eastern Culture Zone' for Japan and China, a Travel Agents, and Dance Workshop (fortunately I was not assigned that one!!)
Other excitement for the day was a small fire downtown. Crowds had gathered around a building with flames coming out the second floor. Some fire trucks arrived and proceeded to put out the fire.
Onlookers pressed as close as they could to the flames to take pictures with their smartphones!
