Exploring Lake Bled & Vintgar Gorge

Radovljica, Radovljica, Slovenia
We enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast downstairs where the delightful hostess couldn’t have tried harder to keep all of her guests happy. When Michael asked for poached eggs, despite never having heard of them before, she enthusiastically headed off to the kitchen to experiment. With great delight, she presented Michael with a very competent poached egg, and then showed him her failed first attempt, which he happily devoured as well!
We set off for the nearby village of Bled at about 9:30am. It’s just as well we didn’t leave it until any later, as the traffic crawled at a snail’s pace as we got closer to the lake. I guess it’s not surprising, as Lake Bled is one of the top tourist destinations in Slovenia. We parked the car just outside the main part of the village and then walked the rest of the way.
With a castle perched on a cliff high above the lake, and a small church sitting on a small island in the middle of it, it is not surprising that photos of Lake Bled are most often used to represent Slovenia. The glorious sunshine ensured that we were seeing it at its best, and enabled us to take some great photographs as we wandered around the entire circumference of the lake. An hour and a half later, it was time for a refreshment break — an opportunity to sample a custard cream slice for which Slovenia is famous, and which apparently originated in this area. I shared one with Michael, and also enjoyed an inexpensive decaf cappuccino. The custard part of the slice was very light and airy,  as if it has been mixed with whipped egg whites.
It was then time to move on to our next destination, Vintgar Gorge. I had no idea how spectacular this walk would be! It reminded us a little of Johnstone’s Canyon in Canada. It probably took us about 45 minutes to wander through the gorge — we stopped frequently to take photos, of course.
On the way home, Hermann dropped Michael and me off at the supermarket so that we could stock up with a few more items. We tried to find Michael some suitable sunglasses, as he left his in NSW on a recent trip to attend his cousin’s wedding. He didn’t like any of them, and so he’ll just have to keep on squinting for a bit longer.
After freshening up, Hermann & Gitti joined us for a ‘Dropbox party’ — drinks and nibbles, and a lesson in how to share photos (from our trip to Norway last year) using Dropbox, and from our current trip using Airdrop. We then headed out for dinner. Michael selected a restaurant that had been given reasonable reviews on Trip Advisor — I must remember to log in and let them know that we weren’t that impressed. The serves were huge, but the beef and noodle soup lacked flavour, and my goulash with gnocchi was a bit chewy and dry. Never mind — with full bellies, we headed back into the centre of the village, stopping at a wine bar to have a final drink (soda for me!). Here, I recorded the waitress pronouncing the name of her village, but as the wifi where we are now is incredibly slow, I won’t bother trying to upload the video. Suffice it to say, the Slovenian language is a little bit tricky for us English speakers!
We went straight to bed, worn out after our very active day.
