Hiking on the Fiesch Alp — breathtaking panoramas

Eggishorn, Valais, Switzerland
After breakfast and a quick visit to the village to access the internet, we drove to the nearby town of Fiesch which is located just across the river below where we are staying. From there, two cable car trips took us to the top of the Fiesch Alp where we stepped outside to see the most magnificent view of snow-covered mountain peaks and the huge Aletsch Glacier. Unfortunately, photos really don’t capture the immense size of the mountains and the depth of the valleys.
A rocky walk along a ridge took us to the top of the Eggishorn Peak where we stayed for a short time to try and take in the awesome scenery around us.
We then began the descent, stopping at a beautiful lake for lunch, and then continuing down to another lake. (We decided to avoid too much uphill climbing, as it tends to aggravate my hip/thigh. Also, despite taking an antihistamine before we set off, lots of exertion in the heat still triggers my cholinergic urticaria [heat rash] — and this seems to affect my ability to sleep!)
After a brief stop at a ‘Stube’ (a friendly cafe) where Astrid had a coffee, and unfortunately lost her favourite Swatch watch (she didn’t realise until we were back in the car), we entered a one-kilometre long pedestrian tunnel which was cold and damp, but sufficiently illuminated for us to see our way. Now back on our side of the mountain, we wound our way around the side of the mountain to the cable car station — just one cable car trip down the mountain. By the time we arrived back at the bottom, it was well past 3:55pm, the amount of time we had allowed for on our parking ticket. Luckily, we weren’t greeted by a parking fine!
Amazingly, the weather was still very warm, and so we had to wait until the sun disappeared behind the mountain in front of us before we could venture out on the balcony for dinner, mushroom risotto and salad with some sparkling wine to help relax us.

I like the idea of a pedestrian walk way through the tunnel to get you back and hopefully nice and cool after all the heat

The recordings in script and photos have provided at least a glimpse of the awesome beauty about which you wrote. This must surely be one of the most spectacular mountain scenes of all your global walks.

So I finally caught up to you and your amazing adventure. Stunning pics in Slovenia, Germany and Suisse. I wonder, among those mountains, if you could have possibly resisted the urge to break out in songs from the Sound of Music. I think this is one of my favourite trips of all I've done with you. Oh, there's Ian!... How are you? Fantastic tour, isn't it!
