The Sounds of Parrots Squawking

Portsmouth, Saint John, Dominica
We had visited Prince Rupert Sound, Dominica, on our way south back in December but could not hike the rain forest then as it was TOO rainy – so we were back to try again.

We spent three nights here and succeeded in taking a guided hike up the rain forest mountain of Morne Diablotin, the highest peak on the island. We made it all the way to the top - 4747 feet in the clouds--heard plenty of the rare parrots and saw several pairs flying from a distance. It was all fascinating and beautiful—a healthy rainforest at its finest. Even the mud was manageable!

We also visited the gorgeous Milton Falls and got a lesson from our guide, Paul, in opening "jelly nuts" (not-yet-ripe coconuts) to drink the refreshing coconut water.

Dominica is indeed one of the best jewels of the Caribbean. Donna kept raving about the “textures” so vivid in the landscape that you could marvel at for hours from our anchorage.
