Lost cities of Angkor, Day 2! Today the driver took me on the so called Grand Tour, into the extended area of Angkor. First stop Phnom Bakheng then Preah Khan, Neak Poan, East Mebon and Banteay Kdei. It is absolutely amazing what the Khmer Empire was able to build here between the 9th and 16th century. And worth to be called a wonder of the world. Especially considering the heat and humidity! Oh, almost forgot, I saw a Cobra in the jungle today :)
Every temple is surrounded by swarms of people trying to sell anything and everything at any given time
. No escape for westerners ;)
On one occasion a girl tried to sell me something and as usual I kept repeating: "No, thank you!" when she all of a sudden smiled and replied in perfect German: "Wenn Du nichts kaufst muss ich weinen." (If you don't buy something I have to cry.) The way she said that was so funny we were both laughing. Of course she didn't end up crying because I bought a coconut drink and a little statue ;) As we were chatting she told me her story which is very typical for Cambodia. She had to drop out of school so her younger brothers and sisters could all get at least a couple of years of basic education. Only because they can't afford the $100/year per student for all of their 8 children at the same time. And we in the US spend over 2.5 Billion Dollars for this years election campaigns... It makes you so angry when you think about how many good things could be done here with the money we waste on that shit.
Die verlorenen Staedte von Angkor, 2
.Tag!
