I actually planned to see the Royal Palace, the National Museum and the famous Silver Pagoda today. But as it happened the former King of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk died of a heart attack today during a medical treatment in Beijing, China. And therefore all official buildings were immediately closed for visitors. So I strolled along the Mekong river and escaped the heat having lunch and a few beers at the Foreign Correspondents Club overseeing the promenade. Later I checked out a couple of bars but due to the ongoing Buddhist holidays the city and its venues look more like a ghost town because everyone flocks to the countryside for the festivities.

Fuer heute plante ich eigentlich mir den Koeniglichen Palast, das Nationalmuseum und die beruehmte Silberpagode anzuschauen . Wurde aber nichts daraus, weil der fruehere Koenig Norodom Sihanouk heute nach einem Herzinfarkt waehrend seiner medizinischen Behandlung in Peking gestorben ist. Und deswegen alle offiziellen Gebaeude fuer Besucher sofort geschlossen wurden. So spazierte ich am Mekong entlang und rettete mich vor der Hitze in den Foreign Correspondents Club, der die Uferpromenade ueberschaut, zum Mittag und ein paar Bier. Spaeter klapperte ich einige Bars ab, doch wegen der buddhistischen Feiertage aehnelt die Stadt und die Lokale eher einer Geisterstadt. Weil die Bevoelkerung fuer die Festlichkeiten hinaus auf's Land faehrt.
