Location and History
Athens is located in the Attica region, the southern portion of the Greek peninsula . Athens is the largest city in Greece and was selected as the capital when Greece became an independent state following the Greek War of Indepence in 1834. It is one of the oldest cities in the world with recorded history dating back some 3,400 years.

A little bit of Athens Trivia
    - Famous for its antiquities, rivaled in the Mediterranean world only by Rome. 
    - Wealthy Romans sent their children to Athens to be educated by its philosophers and its sophisticated culture.
    - Marcus Aurelius, Roman emporer from 161 to 180 A.D., bestowed Athens with four chairs of philosophy, creating the world's first university.
