Santorini, Cyclades, Greece
The name "Santorini" is in reference to the Saint Irene. Prior to being named Santorini, the island was called "Kalliste", meaning "the most beautiful one", or "Strongyle", meaning "the circular one", or Thera, which became the official name of the island during the 19th century.

Santorini is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history - the Minoan, or Thera, eruption, which occurred some 3600 years ago .

Ships cannot anchor in the center of the volcano because the water is too deep; therefore, we had to take tender boats from the ship to the island's port. Once on the island, I boarded a bus and enjoyed the spectacular views up to the top of the island and over to Oia Village where we disembarked for shopping and site seeing. This village is a must-see! Thera is another village on Santorini island that is must-see if time allows. Our bus drove through Thera and allowed anyone interested in touring Thera a chance to get off the bus there, but getting back to the port was on our own. Because it was getting late, I did not want to fight crowds and time to get from Thera down to the port via cable car. More than once on the trip, we were discouraged from riding the donkeys due to long lines and sometimes stubborn donkeys. So, I remained on the bus that took us back to the port where we boarded the tender boats to get back to the ship.

Once I was on board the ship, I rushed up to the top deck and snapped some shots of the sunset bouncing off the layers of volcanic rocks. Santorini is a jewel of Greece not to be missed.
