Archea Olimpia, Greece
Well, this was a totally unexpected trip.  We had hoped to visit Ancient Olympia one day, but one day came today.  Our decision was made when we woke up early this morning, both of us had had a good sleep, and we looked out our balcony window and saw this yellow haze over the sun.  Apparently, there's a yellow dust storm blowing across the Mediterranean, coming up from Africa.
So, we packed an overnight bag, hopped in the car, and headed for the mountains again.  We had to cross a couple of mountain ranges, before arriving at Ancient Olympia.  We had planned to stop for a walk along Lousios Gorge, but I guess we drove right past it.  I'm still not good with Greek road signs.
But, it's been a beautiful day here in Olympia.  I won't give you all the history as you'll see much of it with the pictures.  But, we were both so impressed with the "Wonder and Awe" feeling as we walked through the archaeological site.
It's hard to believe that this had been a religious and athletic centre of Greece for over 12 centuries.   There was the Palaestra (where wrestlers, boxers and long jumpers trained), the Stadium (where running races were held), the Temple of Hera (honouring the goddess), Treasuries, the Metroon with a Doric shrine to Goddess Rhea, the Altar of Oaths (where athletes swore to uphold the honour of the games, and not to cheat!! sound familiar??), the Bouleuterion (the council house for the Olympic Senate, much like our International Olympic Committee), the Leonidaion (a clover-shaped swimming pool for distinguished guests) and central to it all, the Temple of Zeus (with a huge statue dedicated to the chief and most powerful of all ancient Greek gods).
We had planned to stay overnight in the area, and after a delicious late lunch, we wandered around looking for a hotel, pretty hot and tired.  We couldn't believe our luck when we found the most beautiful place at the top of the hill, overlooking Olympia, with grass, church bells and olive trees out our back window.  It's quiet, and we can't believe how we lucked out, once again.  The hot shower was delicious, just perfect to the end of a long, hot, but interesting and emotional day.
Maybe tomorrow we WILL find the Lousios Gorge and enjoy a hike through the mountains, but whatever is meant to be, will be!

That's great that you made the trek over to Olympia. It is so historic one MUST go there. I didn't see a pic of Tom at the start line! The roads are crazy but it's worthwhile. Because we were staying near Sparti, we took the mountain highway over from there to Kalamata and then north to Olympia. It was crazy! Scary roads and drop offs but so exciting and beautiful. And you found such a lovely looking place to stay! Love ya', N.
