Poppy Field, Hot Springs and a Ferry Ride

Chalcis, Greece
We were a bit sad to say good bye to Arahova, but once we got underway it was great.  Today really turned out to be a travelling day, a bit more than we'd expected but all is good.  We didn't know where we were half the time, but things just seem to work out OK for us when we travel.
We had expected to go north to the Pilio Peninsula (the legendary home of forest loving centaurs), but after being on the major toll highway, and spending far too many euros on far too many tolls , we deeked off onto a country road.  From that point on, we really didn't know where we were.
But, we had wanted to find some natural hot springs while here in Greece, and I knew we had to cross the ferry in Glyfa to an island that supposedly had hot springs.  We didn't find any on the island, but we had a glorious swim in a place called Thermopylae, just before the ferry.
While drying off after our wonderful hot and sulphury swim, a van load of teenagers and their teacher piled out (they would have loved it if they could've swum there).   The teacher said that the hot springs were called the Hercules hot springs.  Thermopylae was also the site of a major battle between the Spartans  and Persians.  The Spartan Greeks were greatly outnumbered, and managed to hold on for a few days, but eventually all of Greece fell to the Persians.
After leaving the hot springs, we had a pretty good idea that we were heading towards the ferry, but until we pulled into the town and saw the ferry just loading, we didn't know.  Once we get off the major highways and into the backroads, the road signs are no longer in Greek and English.  We got lost numerous times, and ended up in someone's back yard with chickens.
Getting on in the day, we couldn't find a hotel on the norther part of the island, nor could we find a taverna for supper.  So, we ended up in a city called Chalkida, and found a small hotel for the night.  After a much needed and much appreciated shower to get all the minerals and sulphur out of our hair and skin, we went for supper down by the seafront.  The view was so picturesque with tiny fishing boats, and cats begging for leftover tidbits from our supper.
