Last Day in Greece, Down Town Athens

Athens, Greece
We can't believe we've been here in Greece a whole month.  It has been a great visit, quite busy at times, but also calm and relaxed enough that we feel we've really been on holiday.
But, we're ready to go home.  Springtime in Greece is very colourful with all the wild flowers and trees blossoming, and we'll always  love the heat of the sunny days and gentle breezes in the evenings.  April has been a great time of year to visit, and we would again, but our family and friends are calling us home, so are our gardens, cats, dog and hens.  It is time!
But, for today, we really enjoyed our last full day in Athens.
We didn't get far from our apartment once we headed out.  Mondays must be market day.  One block from our apartment, we came across a huge community market that sold everything you can imagine.  The only thing we didn't see was live chickens for sale.  Again, we realized how sanitized everything in Canada has become.  Take a look at our picture of the olive stand.  It's incredible!!  as was the table of fish, and all kinds of veggies and fruit.   Too bad it's our last day, I didn't buy a thing (Tom's pleased).
We did eventually carry on to Athens by first taking the subway and then finding the Hop On/Hop Off bus.
It was fitting that we visited the Temple of Zeus, the greatest of all Greek gods, for last.  We did a lot of hopping on and hopping off the Big Blue Bus at different sites around Athens.  Interestingly, we could see the Acropolis from all angles throughout the city.  It's true - all roads lead there.
We finished off our day in the Ancient Agora (Marketplace).  That was fascinating to have the modern vendors side-by-side with where the ancient peoples sold their goods.  Some of the ancient cisterns are still functioning with water running through them.  We also enjoyed our very last authentic Greek salad, souvlaki, olives and Greek beer.
All in all, it's been a fantastic trip, and Tom and I feel grateful to have shared this time together exploring the Peloponnese and Central regions of mainland Greece. It's a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
