Highlight The Schloss of course.
When
we booked into Lubeck, I looked for a spot worth stopping at on the
way and found mention of the Schwerin Schloss/Castle/Palace. As it was only a
small detour it made the obvious target for a stop on the way.
We
found a parking building and walked over to the Castle. It is ‘drop-dead’
gorgeous with golden towers, lovely grounds and surrounded by water, Lake
Schwerin. There was some sort of race happening, which looked like it might
have been a fun run judging by the number of onlookers. They seemed to be
running around the Lake but did not stop us walking to the castle, and taking
photos as we went.
There are records of a castle at this site from 973AD. A new
castle was built in the 14th century and in the 16th it
became a palace. This is when it was made more decorative and comfortable to live
in. Major parts of the current palace were built between 1845 and 1857. The palace's
ghost, little Peterman, is said to roam the halls of the Schweriner Schloss.
This invisible little creature is said to be no more than a few feet high, and
is often depicted in clothes from the 17th century, something resembling a
cavalier. For centuries the palace was the home of the dukes and grand
dukes of Mecklenburg and later Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Today it
serves as the residence of the state parliament.
The castle is regarded as one of the most
important works of romantic Historicism in
Europe and is designated to become a World Heritage Site.
It is nicknamed "Neuschwanstein of the North.”
There
was a sign saying a limited amount of hot food was available at the Orangery
but it proved not to be the case today with only café and ice-cream on offer. So
we had to backtrack into the city area where we found a place for a meal and
also an ATM. The town area near the castle was also attractive.
We
discussed whether we should go into the castle. The price was reasonable, the
reviews were mixed, but in the end we decided we were enjoying being outside,
so didn’t bother. We were spoiled for choice with photo opportunities and it
was a matter of which of the many lovely photos was the best, when we went
through them later.
We
then headed for Lubeck. We are staying in an apartment out of the centre and
had no issues parking in the yard and collecting keys from a lock box. As it is
Sunday we knew that supermarket shopping might be an issue, but one showed up
as open on Katherine’s phone. That proved incorrect but we had an orientation
drive during which we found a garage on the way back for our basics. The first McDonald’s
of the trip made an easy tea sitting with the sun streaming into the dining
area at 8pm.
