Zip lining above a rainbow

Yes, I make no secret that I was bit nervous about the zip lining in that as I grow older standing near edges and looking down is not my thing anymore ... never has been in fact. So I was glad on this windy, misty with a light drizzle of a morning there were several short warm up lines to get the feel of zip lining.

I remember back in the days on camps where we set up our flying foxes - pully over a wire with a handle beneath and one just hangs on. An old tent would often be at the end to stop us. None of this today’s safety gear helmet, harness, safety line, gloves. But then again our flying foxes were not high over a valley of some 500 metres to a kilometre in length.

My fears were put at rest after the warm up lines. But was I “leftie” or “rightie“? Decided to be “rightie”. Right hand behind used for braking. And just don’t grab the wire in front of the pully!

Now for the useless statistics as supplied by the Extremo Canopy brochure:

- There are 15 cables
- 5 longest = 550 m / 1804 feet, 425 m / 1394 ft, 600 m / 1968 ft, 750 m / 2460 ft and 1 km / 3280 ft.
- Height from 75 m / 225 ft to 180 m 540 ft
- 24 platforms
- Tarzan Swing 60 m / 196 ft
- Rappel 98 ft
- Total walking distance 3.8 km

On the 500 to 600 metre runs we got up to speed of 50 km per hour.
On run 4 and 8 we had to double up simply to be heavy enough to reach the end.

My memory will be the zip lining with a bright rainbow beneath us. In fact I wish that I had my big camera as I saw on one of the long runs someone coming in one direction and another person on a different line going the other way and they both passed in front of the rainbow at the same time. Simply magic.

As for the what seem to be several hundred steps, especially on the last climb up to where the Superman ride takes off … well that is just part of the experience.

The Tarzan Swing ... Would I or not? Of course I will give it a go … but the initial drop was simply that - a (short) drop. It was a swing of about 60 m / 196 ft. Well the video shows it all! Thanks Lisa for taking it.

The climax was being Superman on this 1 km line. Flying high at I am told some 70 - 80 km above the green valley below will be one of this trip’s highlight. I just wanted to get it over and done with so was the second person to go. We were told not to worry about breaking at the end, just keep our hands out stretched just like Superman. Well, most of us were concerned as we saw the end of the wire in front of us racing to towards us. Yes, the breaking system worked very time.

Most of us stayed and watched Wayne and Colin bungee jump. It is reputed to be the highest in Latin America at 143 metres / 469 ft (an extra US $ 60).

The whole experience for me was only US $ 45 and that included the extra US $ 5 to be Superman. Of all the excursions and optional extras of the trip, so far this is by far the best value for money without a doubt.
