Laugarvatn, Iceland
Today we saw the top tourists sites in all of Iceland; gulfoss and Gysir. We first went to Gulfoss which is a huge multilayer waterfall! It had a huge amount of water flowing down, it is so big with so much water that it is impossible to see the bottom of the waterfall. We could get within 2m of the water that is cascading over the precipice. It was a warm day and we got soaked by the cool mist.
From there we drove a short ways over to Gysir, it is the original geyser after which all others are named . It was fun siting in the sunshine with our cameras propped up, waiting for it to erupt. Pixie was so determined to get the perfect picture with lupin (the beautiful purple flower found everywhere) that she found a lupin flower and propped it up in front of the camera and held it still there the whole time! Gysir was surprisingly unpredictable... Sometimes it went off every 2 minutes... Other times it would be a long 7 minute wait in between eruptions.
We also stopped at this great exhibit on the 2008 earthquake in Hvergoi. They had lots of information about the earthquake and the damages as well as an earthquake simulator! They also had a 3d model of the inside of a houses destruction as well as photos, videos, and people's stories and troubles. It was a very cool exhibit!!
After that we took a detour back to our hostel and stopped at a Kerid crater. It is an exploded magma chamber with a lake at the bottom that has gorgeous multicoloured walls. Bjork (the famous Icelandic singer) had previously done a concert on a raft in the lake! We weren't sure at first if we should really go up to see the crater because we didn't know how amazing it really was going to be, but in the end we were so glad we had gotten to see it!!!
