Akranes, Iceland
We started off the day by visiting one of Iceland's most important historical sites, Pingvellir. The world's first Parliament convened at Pingvellir in 930AD. The Alping met here off and on through the centuries until the 1800's when the government moved to Reykjavik.
Pixie and I explored Pingvellir today . Apart from its historical significance it is also a rift valley. The North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are ripping apart here and this has created a 3km wide valley full of cracks and fissures.
On our way to Akranes we drove around a fantastic fjord called Hvalfjordur. At the head is the hike to Glymur, Iceland's highest waterfall. This was a 3 hour roundtrip hike, but well worth the effort! We had to wind through a cavity in a cliff and then cross a river on a wooden beam while holding on to a suspension cable and some parts were so steep that there were suspension cables to hold on to! At the top we had a great view of the gorge and Iceland's tallest waterfall (200m).
After arriving at our adorable guesthouse, we went for a walk along the beautiful sand beach! We are now relaxing in our guesthouse and enjoying our Icelandic treats!!
This was yet another great day!!!
