THE ISLET OF PROTI

The islet of Proti is opposite Marathopoli or Marathos as locals call it .

It got its name from the ancient Greek sea god Proteus, the son of Poseidon.

In ancient times Proti used to offer shelter to seamen and pirates. There are still engravings dating back to the Byzantine era, boding farewell to seamen.

There also used to be a temple of Efplia Artemis, where at present, over the same site, a church dedicated to Virgin Mary has been erected. Visitors can get to the old Monastery but it is usually locked and is open only on big local celebrations.

The islet is of great archaeological importance with Ruins of an acropolis dating back to the Mycenaean or Pre-classical Era, with a wall and a circular turret that also lies there.

Caves are also to be found at the back side of the islet.

BEACH:

The white sandy beach of Vourlia with its green-blue waters of the Ionian Sea is ideal for swimming.

ACCESS:

Daily boat trips in summer from Marathopoli usually for a trip around the islet, and some sight-seeing.
