THE SEAFRONT STAGE –KIMON SQUARE

Kimon Square is situated in the middle of Athens Avenue as it is called .It got its name back in the 1920's to honor the Athenian General Kimon.

The Athenian General led 200 triremes in 450 BC to free Cyprus from the Persians. He died and was buried here by his army in Larnaca before the final victory.

Just next to the bust, the municipality of Larnaca constructed the open air " Seafront Stage" where all free of charge summer festivities of the town take place. This spot here is visited by thousands of people from all over the island, including tourists. One such festivity of great interest is the Cataclysm's festivity of the Pentecost in early June.

EUROPE SQUARE

Located in the beginning of Athens Avenue.

Some of the most beautiful colonial buildings of 1879 are found .

Larnaca was the biggest port and urban centre of the island those days.

Buildings like the colony’s Governor’s building, the chief Port Master house and office, and the colonial port warehouses are some of these old buildings which have now been restored to accommodate the Paleontology museum, the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, the City-Museum and Archives and the District Administration of Larnaca.

PHINIKOUDES

(Meaning small palm trees) – but now grown into very big ones) were planted in the year 1922.

At various stages some of the original trees died and were replaced by new ones, and this is the reason why we see smaller palm trees in the area nowadays.

Phinikoudes area is the centre of all daily activities .

All residents of Larnaca, visitors of other parts of the island, as well as tourists can come here any time of day or night and enjoy this beautiful location here.

There are many restaurants, fish tarvernas, cafes, hotels and bars that make the area very popular on any time of year.

Unlike other towns – which have centre surrounded by buildings on all sides –this place here is full of life, so pleasant to the visitor and so wonderful.

In summer the hotels and bars restaurants in the round area are full of tourists and locals. Many people of Larnaca find the coast of Finikoudes unique for jogging, so they come early in the morning here to jog, and see the sun coming out of the waters!

I have been here quite a few times in summer when on holidays staying in a couple of nearby hotels, as I also love getting up early in the morning and jog.

Many find friends and jog together, and you can see the speedy pace people depending on the age here! There are people who just come to walk up and down and cover some miles, others who walk much slower with one or two friends chatting while waling, but there are those ones who are so concentrated on what they are doing that you can see all their passion here .

CITY SEAFRONT WALK

Starting from Europe Square you can safely walk along the city’s seafront pavements for 3 kilometers up to the Makenzy pedestrian trail and the airport fencing, or vice-versa.

Along this walk you may enjoy the sandy promenade mingling with the sea, the historic buildings and the seafront traditional city quarters and modern hotels. If you prefer a shorter walk, the favorite of the locals is recommended.

It starts at the Castle and finishes on the pier inside the Larnaca Marina. You can go back and forth as many times as there is available time. This walk will never bore you especially after sunset, because there are always lots of people doing the same walk, which is an old and deeply rooted social activity of all Larnacians.

Thanks Louise,
Cyprus is a wonderful Island indeed. Larnaca my hometown is great. I am in love with it, and this is why I am writing about my country. In fact I am going there again soon to write more. What I wrote up to now are just the 2 out of 8 days stay there.
