THE HALA SULTAN TEKKE

Founded in 649 A .D.



This historic mosque is just 3 km west of Larnaca very near the airport terminal on the central salt lake.

Um Haram who was the Aunt of Prophet Mohamed died here as a result of an accident.   

This mosque is now considered to be the fourth most important religious place in the world for the Muslims and the first most important religious place for the Turkish Cypriots.

It is actually the only surviving Arab monument in Cyprus, built in 1816 over the tomb of Umm Haram, and was renovated taking its present appearance.

In Ottoman times, it was a Tekke. In the year 2002 a new renovation and reconstructions was undertaken.

Extraordinary archeological excavations in the same year revealed the place was inhabited since Neolithic times.

Nowadays, the monument receives thousands of pilgrims and tourists.
