Last day in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, Thailand
Today we spent the morning doing office work and getting caught up on my journal and various other things. Leon came by about 14:00. Gloria came too, and we talked for about three hours. Dave and I made a number of suggestions to help and also to review the parameters of Youth Corps volunteers' work for Legacy.

I had told the teachers I was planning to come out and video tape them in brief interviews, but by the time we finished with Leon it was past 17:00. Daniel Miller called Leon's cell phone and asked if we could have some more time to talk together with the group. Dave and I were happy to do so. So we started out to the school, but didn't arrive until nearly 18:30. By that time it was too dark to tape effectively so, we just got together with the teachers and had another long talk. We continued our discussion from the previous evening, again seeking to put things in perspective. They are in the most challenging period right now, dealing with the stresses and strains of workins so far from home.

We encouraged them, thanked them for their work and told them to keep their eyes on the finish line, now only a month or so away. Next year I need to come earlier in their school year. I felt like our visit was helpful for them, and Dave and I came away encouraged by their heart and committment to service.

We had dinner with Leon and Gloria at the dinner club below the Empress. The food was only fair and too inexpensive. We had the chance to summarize our thoughts and tie up some loose ends. Dave and I didn't get back to our rooms until just now at midnight. Tomorrow we have be up at 04:00 for our flights to Manila. Another short night!
