...on what began as a mild sunny day, deteriorated to misery at the wheel then 1hr & 6miles later at the Kelpies was beautiful sunshine.9.15am we bade farewell to 7 Canongate, our home for the past 6nights, it was a great wee flat, very well located, warm and very well catered for. Handy Tescos for essentials.
Another friendly cabbie took us to the Europcar checking at the airport. 11 counters open - Europcar alone, Avis had queues and queues at their, Hertz wasn’t too busy. We were given a check in number -39, and waited about 20mins before being attended too. Well organised but soooo busy.
Cute LITTLE bright Red Vauxhall Corsa, manual, 5 speed, peppy, unleaded and easy to drive. We had to put the back seat down to fit our bags, and we haven’t got many either. It’s actually the same size as 80% of the cars here in Grangemouth/Falkirk.
However, the Falkirk wheel. Made our way here via back roads, and tourists trails, about 16- 20 miles from Edinburgh Airport. Again, not what I was expecting, it was located, almost like, in a paddock or a valley, drove down a desolate road to find a car park and the wheel.
The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in central Scotland, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The lift is named after Falkirk, the town in which it is located. It reconnects the two canals for the first time since the 1930s. It opened in 2002 as part of the Millennium Link project.Was very interesting, we did the “loop” . Best to do a google description, 1) that way I cannot be held responsible for miss interpreting its mechanics and 2), I’ve had a gin and this can become arduous. So for anyone interested google: https://www.scottishcanals.co.uk/falkirk-wheel/about-the-wheel/
There are two tourist barges, one called Armedeus and the other Antonine. Armedeus's theory of water displacement is the basis of the wheel and Antonine to do with the Antonine wall which in the vicinity. We didn’t find it that exciting, but I had it on the list and we've now done it. I think it might be time for it’s annual overhaul as it looked pretty shabby.
We left there and headed for the Kelpies - they deserve a blog of their own - we fell in love with them!
{there are more pics on Kevin camera which I haven’t downloaded yet}
