Many Contrasts

Tallinn, Estonia
We arrive in Port early and find a British Naval ship parked alongside. It is actually a so called carrier as it has the short inclined ramps for the Harrier fighter aircraft. There is a large and typical souvenir stands along the port area however we are picked up by the tour bus and taken to the high spots of Tallinn. This former Soviet country is proud of their independence. They may not be a wealthy place but they are happy with what they have. Some of the historic buildings are both incredible in design but in bad need of repair. A large open concert area overlooks the city. We are taken to a lavish yacht club then the old city with the Fortress, the churches and the medieval buildings. The streets are cobblestone and it does take us back to the middle ages. Street vendor ladies dress in peasant clothes are selling hot roasted peanuts. The Alexander Nevsky cathedral is impressive in design, crowded with tourists and even is busy in its purpose as a local soul gets their last rights. The guide lets us know that there is so much to see here and it is too bad our stay is so short. She is right! We enjoy a local beer then make our way back to the Century
