After we got back from our road trip, Rodrigo had a few more
days in town before heading home to Tacoland. Amazingly enough, it was warm
enough in the middle of October that we were abler to eat a couple meals
outside on the deck. My last few weeks before leaving in early November on my
next big overseas trip involved a fair amount of campaign work as well as trip
prep – getting everything in order for a trip on which I have to bring my own
camping gear. That involved a bit of
shopping. I hate shopping!
My work with local Republicans was mostly behind the scenes
stuff like communications and planning. Ballots were mailed in Montana on
October 11th so the focus then shifted from persuading voters to
support our side to GOTV (get out the vote) work to make sure those have reason
to believe support our side actually get out and vote. Honestly, phone banking
and canvassing (door knocking) are two things I personally hate doing, so I try
to find excuses not to contribute in that way. I got roped into some of it,
though. The campaign season wrapped up with a GOTV rally in Manhattan for
Senate candidate Tim Sheehy with Senator Steve Daines of Montana and Senator
Tom Cotton or Arkansas.
Election night is my favorite night every four years. I
usually watch the results come in from home, although I would probably attend
the Republican election night party this year if I were around for it. My travel plans are such, though, that I will
be leaving on my Middle Eastern trip on Monday, the day before Election Day. I
will be in Istanbul as the results come in.
