Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka
Polonnaruwa is Sri Lanka’s second ancient capital, and at
only about 1,000 years old is a relative youngster compared to Anuradhapura
.
Also in the north-central “Cultural Triangle” Polonnaruwa consists of five
groups of ruins dating from the 1100s A.D. onwards spread over a quite large
area, including a royal palace complex, a religious triangle, and another area
of carved Buddha statues. Polonnaruwa also has a great modern archaeological museum
detailing the history and religious significance of the sights.After lunch there was another Jeep safari, this one into
Minneriya National Park, a relatively small park of grasslands and open scrub
around some lakes. Although there were monkeys and eagles and plenty of other
birds, Minneriya’s top draw is its large population of wild elephants. Unlike
elusive leopards, you can’t miss the elephants.
