The mountaintop castles of Sintra are clearly visible ahead. And yet... it seems so hard to get to them. The main road heading that way is a non-pedestrian freeway. I zigzag through the backstreets of Mem Martins, hoping to find a road that will take me across the train tracks to start that last climb up to Sintra... but no... it seems everything stops here. It's frustrating to see my destination right there in front of me on the mountaintop but seemingly impossible to get to.
Finally I spot a bridge across the freeway... but this seems to take me to an idyllic country road that winds through the hills past country estates... I continue on and on, crossing my fingers and hoping this pleasant day won't end badly.
Finally I reconnect with the Sintra road straight up the hillside, where i finally reach my destination well after nightfall.
