1438. The Last of the Old Streetcars

Friday, January 04, 2013
Colares, Estremadura, Portugal
Day 178
3 hrs, 5 .0 kms

I follow a peaceful tree lined road to another full size town with a creek running through it and some large, nicely fixed up wine cellar bodega style buildings...

Then open countryside... and finally the Atlantic Ocean.

Actually, this is another symbolic place. While Sagres (where I was a few days ago) is the SOUTHwesternmost point of continental Europe, This is the actual EASTERNmost spot in Europe. Here there's a peaceful little beach town, a stream that runs into the sea, and a trail you can follow along the grass-rock slopes leading to the sea.

Here I play my parkbench concert and soak in the moment.

There is just a regular bus that'll take me back to Sintra, but as I approach the main road, a rickety old fashioned streetcar is approaching--which is also going to Sintra. It's more just for tourists and costs an extra Euro, but I figure it'll be fun to try something different...

Inside it's still got the old wood panelling and everything and none of the mechanisms have been upgraded. It screeches and squeals going around the turns and is torturously slow on the uphills... but it does give you a feel that you're in 1913 rather than 2013... until you look out and see the cars speeding past...
