1439. A Night Hike in the Wrong Direction

Friday, January 04, 2013
Amadora, Estremadura, Portugal
Day 178
3 hrs, 2 .6 kms
Day Totals: 16 hrs, 18.6 kms

It's almost dark when I get to Sintra, but I'm still thirsty for a little more adventure. I figure, why not get off the train at a nearby suburb and walk the rest of the way to downtown Lisbon, getting a headstart on tomorrows hike? So I get off in Amadora where the Great Lisbon Aqueduct (which amazed me on my last visit) passes through--granted, it's not nearly as high as it is in Lisbon.

Here I find a beautiful park in the center of town. The streets are all lit up and there's a cozy feel to the town. But this quickly ends as I reach the edges and realize that... I have no idea which way to go. Ahead is darkness. There are patches of lights here and there across a wide valley, but no idea which way is Lisbon and which is just another suburb!

And although I don't feel threatened at all, I'm starting to feel pretty uneasy about wandering through dark empty stretches at night here...

I just walk aimlessly for a bit, looking for anything that might give me a clue--but nothing. Finally I decide I'd better cut my losses and just find whatever public transportation I can and get out of here... Luckily there's a subway station that takes me straight to Lisbon...

Later, tracing my steps on the map I figure out that I somehow got turned around and was heading AWAY from the city instead of towards it!

Anyways... it still was an amazing day.
