Limassol, Limassol, Cyprus
Mike and I awoke this morning about 6 a.m. but decided we were just too tired to get up. Finally about 8:30 a.m. we arose, although we were still very tired after our long day yesterday. After breakfast we walked around in the sun and then I went to the classroom building to check emails and work on my classes. Mike and I had planned to walk to Old Town but we decided it was just too hot and we were too tired. So we decided to just eat lunch nearby at the Cutty Sark Bar and Grill. We asked Mel, the owner, if he had the Cypriot lunch available (it was not on the tourist menu but sometimes it’s available if you ask). He said yes he did and brought us what he called the Cypriot special—white beans with carrots and potatoes with cucumbers, olives, and tomatoes on the side. It was delicious! I drank a diet cola and Mike had a large Keo beer.
After lunch we went back to the room to rest before I had to teach class. After our classes, Mike G. and I walked back to the hotel to meet Mike and Emily. We then waited for Socrates to take us out to dinner at Forsos Taverna in the Village of Mouttagiaka. This village is in the hills outside the city of Limassol proper and until 1960 was almost entirely inhabited by Turkish Cypriots. It was SUCH a magical place! We walked through these winding little streets and then into a courtyard that looked like something out of a movie set. There were twinkly lights everywhere, jasmine blooming, and Cypriot men playing checkers! We all sat down at a long table in the courtyard where we had a huge meze of meats and vegetable and bottles of wine and ouzo! Mike and I laughed as we were asked by a waiter what kind of wine we would like—we responded red for Mike and white for me. Wouldn’t you think that meant a glass of wine? Nope! They brought us each an entire bottle! We shared with our table mates of course. What a lovely time we had! After a lengthy dinner Socrates drove us back to the hotel about midnight. Another late night and we were happy but very tired again.
