Tobacco Caye II
Stingray Day
Today must be Stingray day: during lunch time we saw a lot of sting rays coming in and swimming around the docks – it was so super cool – at one time there was a very small cute ray and later when we looked at our pictures we saw that one actually had pointed wings: so it likely was an Eagle Ray.
Today for supper they have snapper, so one of the guys was cleaning the fish at the dock. The Pelicans were close by because they were waiting for some left overs and the stingray came – they went around the guy – always between 2 and 4 or them circling around. Paul then went in the water and had the sting rays around his feet. And that is when we learned that the Pelicans are scarred if the sting rays.
So will the Stingray’s Attack?
  • There are different stingrays: the ones with short tails are sharp and can kill you, if you swim above them they poke you with the tail coming up and it can go right into your heart
  • the one with the long tail they whip you and then it shoots spine into your body and explode and shoots some venom into you which is not lethal – guess Paul is quite save since he doesn’t swimming
  • by the way it is no problem to swim below the stingrays (if you find enough space between the sand and the ray)
  • and by the way there are over 630 different rays and we saw at least 3 of them: the Sting ray, the Spotted Eagle Ray, Yellow Ray
and then we decided to relax a bit – swimming – relaxing in the sand – sitting on our veranda – looking out on the water. It was a truly amazing day – but clearly our highlight were the sting rays.
Sunset with an Eagle ray
and again we are sitting on our veranda to watch the sunset: and Paul saw something super unique – he said a Sting ray jumped out of the water. Later we asked Par and learned that it was likely an Eagle ray, because they have fish sucking to them and then they jump out of the water and when coming back the fish all fall of for a bit.
Breakfast with the Spotted Eagle Ray
We barely have coffee to wake up and we see a Ray coming in, and when we checked it out we discovered it is the spotted Eagle Ray: we could see the dots beautiful on it. And as we watch it we saw the little yellow sting ray and to top it all of a barracuda comes in and sits still. I mean you can’t get a better start of the day or?
Kayak around Tobacco Caye
after a short break today’s plan is to kayak around the Caye. Kayaks out and we start out: we saw some cool black birds out at the Mangroves – went over the shallow area by the other cabanas – then by all the docks – we found a perfect deep grass free and coral free area which is perfect for swimming. Followed by kayaking over the corals: we could see nearly more corals then during snorkelling, and because we got quite hot we decided to go for a swim: which was nice and refreshing, but going back into the kayak is not that super simple and one has to hold it that it doesn’t flip over.
Sun Break = Lunch Break
after being out for 2 hours in the sunshine it is important to have a short break and as it is 12.30 that means it is lunch break: on todays Menu are super yummy tortillas. We are so spoiled here. Then we hang around the dock for a bit watch stingrays and relax until it is time for:
Swim and jump from the Paddle boarding
not far out only to the deep area and we jump into the water it is nice and fresh and relaxing – then we sit around and lie around on the paddle boards – in and out of the water – jumping in the water – swimming – splashing and having a water war... we had so much fun and I think a lot of sun.
Tsunami warning
when we paddle back in: Lilly called out to Paul and asked if we are coming in and we were wondering why: when Lilly told us there was an earthquake in Jamaica and there is a Tsunami warning for 4 pm – but they don’t think it will be too high. But they don’t want anyone in the water during the Tsunami warning. When Gine was wondering where the Tsunami evacuation route is? Lilly said 2 years ago they went all to the Marine station and waited there. Guess there is not much with going to a higher ground.
The perfect sunset with coconut pie
and as a last bonus we had a beautiful sunset and also for desert we had coconut pie: the cook came earlier and picked fresh coconuts from the tree near our hut – did you know, that you have to make sure that the coconut has the right ripening for getting a good pie... it was super yummy!!
Did I mention they have here 3 different options for breakfast: so each day we have another one: Belizean style – Omelette and today it’s fruit with yoghurt and granola – so we could try them all. The last good by’s and we are in the boat driving in beautiful weather and smooth sea back to Dangriga.
