Cliffs of Moher and Loop Head Lighthouse

Doolin, County Clare, Ireland
Not another tractor.  That was often muttered by Cathal today. We did encounter a fair few on the roads!
Big day today. Especially for Cathal who did a 10km run this morning and then drove us all over the place and walked heaps again.
We headed off early to the Cliffs of Moher before all the tour buses arrived. Yep, the cliffs are rather speccy, rising 390ft above the ocean and up to a maximum of 700ft in one section!  A little difficult to capture in a photo as the rock is dark and the sky was so bright. We tried though!
There’s so many signs warning visitors to keep to the track and stay away from the edge yet we still saw plenty of people standing or sitting right on the edge. Seeing 66 people have died since 1993 - it’s pretty stupid to risk your life for a selfie!  Anyway, we stayed away from the edges and went for a nice long walk of about 10kms along the cliff path to the fort and back.
Was great getting there before the influx. As we got closer to the visitor center on our return, more and more people were on the trail - and we heard some classically stupid comments like this one from an American woman.
She was standing at the cliff, looking out to sea and said ... “Oh that’s beautiful.. the sea, the ocean.. oh… whatever that is”.
How some people manage to dress themselves in the morning is beyond me!
We stopped in a village called Lehinch for lunch at a little bakery and had cups of tea of course, then we continued on to Loop Head lighthouse in County Clare. Felt like the end of the earth. So quiet and serene. Both the guides here were super friendly and chatty too. Went up the lighthouse for a 360 view around the peninsula then we walked along the cliffs here too trying in vain to spot puffins.
Pretty interesting shapes in the cliffs, almost looks like the rock has been folded.
We walked around the end of the peninsula and found a spot were people had spelled out their names with rocks on the grass. There was one unusual name ... “C you next Tuesday”.  I’m guessing that was an Aussie!
Needed (yes needed, not wanted) a snack after this so we stopped in at a cute little cafe / gift shop to have afternoon tea of cakes and yup you guessed it, more tea.   I also picked up a book here with 110 potato recipes. Hey, I am in Ireland after all!
After this we drove the 80kms back to Doolin and rested for awhile before heading out for dinner.
Back to the same pub for dinner and this time I had an Irish speciality - beef stew braised in Guinness with par boiled potato.  Full is an understatement. Went for another walk after dinner tonight to try and shake it all down. Total of 17km today. Might need an early night!!
