Bye bye Istanbul, Ferry Ride to Canakkale

Canakkale, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey
We loaded up after breakfast and made our way from Istanbul to the province of Canakkale via ferry.

The protests in Istanbul were very unfortunate and we were keeping close tabs on them during our visit to Turkey . Istanbul is a beautiful city to visit, so I regret to say that we were happy to be "escaping" it, but as our bus driver had to carefully navigate back streets to avoid street blockades set up by police and protesters, that's exactly how we felt that morning. Later, in Kusadasi, the bus driver showed us a mean gash on the back of the bus that the protesters caused. Weeks following our visit the protests and police brutality continued. I listen to NPR every morning so I heard daily reports on the protests. I was not surprised to hear how the prime minister bullied the media into silence, but thanks to social media, the protesters had a voice all around the world.

The bus drive from Istanbul to the Ferry was nice and relaxing. I'm sure some of us got in a nap. I don't ever recall being on a ferry that carried motor vehicles, so that was a first. Unfortunately, I spent too much of the ride waiting in line for a bathroom. A disgusting one, at that. But I got a few snaps - enough to remember the ferry ride by, so it's all good.

It was exciting to continue on to another part of Turkey, from the Istanbul Province to the Canakkale Province.
