Turkish Carpets

Bergama, Izmir, Turkey
We stopped by Desen Carpet Weavers Association in Bergama where we watched demonstrations on how the silk is spun and the carpets are hand woven. It can take several months to weave the carpets, depending on the size and complexity of design. The carpets are quite expensive, silk carpets being the most. My souvenir budget allowed for a small hand woven piece, something like 21"x21.5", silk on cotton thread. During the "carpet show" in which various carpets were presented for our consideration of purchase, we were served Turkish apple tea. Then we were invited to walk on the carpets, with or without shoes. Several men appeared from the back to disperse among our group and explain the various carpets and entice us to buy. The owner of the carpet factory brought more carpets to the hotel in Assos later that evening in hopes to sell more carpets to our group. It is an experience in which anyone traveling to Turkey should participate. Even if you do not walk out with a carpet.
