Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia
The 2hours coach journey to Hervey Bay revealed why the roads had been closed the day before. The flooding had reduced however much of the land was still water logged and in parts the road was still covered. The coach took it slow but made it to Hervey Bay no problem.

I'm beginning to see some familiar faces as a few people are traveling up the east coast at the same pace as me. The last night in Rainbow beach I had a beer with a Canadian I'd meet in Coffs Harbour and on the coach to Hervey Bay sat next to a german guy called Max who I'd met in Noosa, then saw again on Fraser Island.

I stayed at a really nice place called the Friendly hostel. It was very homely, with each dorm having its own TV area with sofas, a nice bathroom, a small kitchen and free wifi.

I only was in Hervey Bay 24hours but this was enough. There isn't much of a town centre so I went for a 15km walk. I walked along the beach for 7km and it was the first time I noticed I was near the
Great Barrier reef. Little pieces of coral were washed up on the beach and there wasn't big waves, so the sea acted as a mirror reflecting the sunset colours. I also came across a cool crab shell.

I walked up to a very long pier (844meters long) which used to be a railway track used to stock ships, then down to the marina. After this back along the roads to the hostel, where there were fruit bats in the sky. Very nice spending some quiet time walking.
