Magnetic Island and unexpected stop in Townsville

Magnetic Island, Queensland, Australia

Made it to Magnetic Island, despite the risk of roads being closed any time during the journey from Airlie to Townsville. Straight off the Greyhound got on the 30minute ferry, followed by a 20minute bus ride to the YHA hostel on Magnetic Island.

The hostel was really nice, with small detached bungalows set in the bush. Saw so many cool animals whilst staying here, Kangaroos and Rock Wallabies jumped around the resort, possums came out at night (including a mother with a baby), hundreds of lorikeets filled the trees and caught a glimce of rare black cockatiels. Being in the tropics there was also many weird bugs and insects, especially at night time.

The toprical rain on the first day didn't stop with paths turning into streams all round the resort. I got a bottle of red wine and started watching session6 of 24. Not much else to do on the island in the rain.

On the second day the weather was still grey so went for a hike up to a world war II fort with a Canadian called Callum. The fort was built as protection against the Japanese, with the 2 gun emplacements, ammunition store and signal tower still intact and very interesting to look round. There were bats nesting inside the gun emplacement building. In the evening played the pub quiz in the hostel, with all 3 teams getting a jug of free beer!

It was a shame not to see Magnetic Island in the sun as there wasn't much to do in the rain. I came back to the mainland after 2days to get a coach north, however found out the coach was cancelled due to flooding in the south. I therefore had an unexpected night in Townsville. This turned into 2 nights when the coaches were still a mess the next day with coaches stuck in the south. Luckily sun came back out with lovely 30+ degree weather. I had a look round the town and used the free internet in the library. Sat on the beach and watched a beautiful sunset. Also took this as a chance to go for a run, first one in a while.

Its been nice chilling out in the sun, however I just hope my coach runs on Friday.
