Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Today I go back to the steamy south but first some loose ends need to be tied up. At 8.30 two taxis arrive at the hotel, one for Johnnie for Danang airport and one for me to the police station. The way things work here is that if you report a crime the hotel you are staying at is part of the supporting cast, seeing they have possession of your passport. When I was at the police station the previous day my passport was brought there for the police to examine. Today the hotel receptionist and her husband and baby accompanied me to the police. I got a taxi the receptionist borrowed a scooter and the husband and baby came on a seperate scooter.
The records had been moved to another police station so we had another journey to the outskirts of Hoi An, this time I was with Hubby, My Le's daughter had the baby and the receptionist. We stop at the police station and hubby goes off with baby to return later. So Nhi and the receptionist and I go into the station and talk to an officer who gives us a copy of my statement signed in a dozen places and with a big red stamp. I signed it again in a few places and it was mine at last.
We wait for hubby and he returns me to the hotel. I sit around for a while and start to feel hungry so go up Cua Dai road and find a stall selling Com Binh Dan which is Chicken, Rice and vegetables. That summary doesnt tell you how good it is though, it also comes with a bowl of soup with a green edible leaf in it that is hot. I watched the guy opposite and learned how to eat it, which was basically eat the leaves and pour the soup down your throat. Guy opposite asked a young woman to ask how old I was, she said you are very handsome! Wasn't that nice? First compliment I have got here, usually its Happy Buddha!
Then back to hotel and at the appointed time My Le shows up to make sure my driver arrives. I was sad to leave Hoi An but I know I'll be back.
We drive to the airport and when we arrive I pull out my wallet and the guy grabs his phone and makes a call. He says Madame Le says no charge.
Jetstar due to leave at 10.40 delayed an hour which became 40 minutes.
Get toSaigon and man is waiting for me and drives me to hotel. Hotel very apologetic but they only have room on the fourth floor and they know I have trouble climbing stairs so the book me into a hotel The Victory about 20 metres away.
New receptionist at Nguyen Khang! Where is Thanh! Where is Khanh? She is a bright spark too, I had a brief conversation about pronunciation of Vietnamese words and she was completely lost with my words,l even something so simple as Hue. The way everybody says it is WAY but she couldn't understand it.More on that later as she wants to practise English. I will get her back.
Saigon is 100% humidity at 8.30 at night, the street was a lot quieter when I went to 5 Oyster bar. I had grilled squid in chili sauce again but after eating seafood in Hoi An I was spoiled and I was a little let down.
One of my friends was surprised I didn't know that prawn cocktail wasn't a cocktail. If its got prawns in it my sister would eat it. If someone got between her and her prawns their eyes would go first and then she'd be aiming a lot lower. My sister would bath in prawns if she could and throw the shells on the floor. I have seen her at the Hoi An fish market sniffing the wind and saying " I smell prawns". So what I am saying is that if there was an alcoholic drink containing prawns sista would have her face in it.
