What I did today

Saigon Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
My dentist appointment was at 5.45 so I had a virtually free day. Last time I was here we visited the War Remnants museum as it is euphemistically called. but then I had an ill fitting pair of shoes and it was very hot so I skipped a number of exhibits. My visit to day was courtesy of a Xe Om driver, the motorcycle cowboys I had vowed never to use again. I was at Allez Boo cafe having a coffee and being a target of every street vendor that went past when this guy, John approached me. Oh yes while I was there the batteries in my brand new Coolpix Nikon went flat and I asked a street lady to get some new ones. She did and since then my camera doesn't work! All the pics today are phone images.
John had worked in Darwin and knew a bit of English . He also quoted me a reasonable price to travel to the museum. He was a bit of a wobbly driver but for $2 who cares. We arrived in one piece and then he wanted to wait for me, actually he knew the museum closed for lunch and it was almost closing time so he was smart. I cut my losses and paid him his 2 bucks and walked down to a nearby park nearby which happened to be opposite the Reunification Palace which was also closed for lunch. Speaking of which I looked up the Commonwealth Bank website and they proclaim , open 9 to 4 No Naps.
The French left a wonderful legacy or parks and avenues by the way, it always reminds me of the sequence from the Monty Python film, Life of Brian. What have the Romans done for us? Apart from roads and schools? Nothing, well apart from a law system and wine...nothing!
Stroll up to War Remnants and look at 2 floors of fairly horrible stuff. Bombing, maiming, torture, Agent Orange and weapons. Turns out I didn't miss much the first time. And Marley, the guy who can do up buttons and count out money with no hands is still there . The highlight for me was the three antiwar posters from Australia,
Then back home by taxi and another trip to the beautician for a pedicure and manicure, I came out looking wonderful and my feet feel good. In case anyone was wondering my foot massage was indeed a foot massage.
A shower and a rest and into another taxi and off to see my teeth. The taxi driver got lost and the traffic was horrendous at this time of day, and for the first time I was able to direct someone where to go. I guess people come from the provinces and get jobs driving taxis, but most know Saigon very well.
The waiting room was full of French with their children. You can spot a French woman a mile off, so stylishly dressed, ha and the kids read Asterix books, dead giveaway. So I got to see the teeth and they are magnifique! Need a few tweaks and tomorrow they should be in my mouth.
Back home and I was supposed to meet Montreal Johnnie for dinner but the bar I directed him to didn't exist so went to a new place Dune Bar which was full of Frenchmen speaking volubly and maybe dreaming of past glories.
