Mount Magnet, Western Australia, Australia
Mount Magnet has been like a magnet to us for the past few days of ghost towns and sleepy villages, finally we will hit the big smoke, a bustling rural and mining community sitting astride the busy Goldfields arterial that is the Great Northern H’way. Ah, no!
Some 60klm west of Sandstone (fare thee well you little gem), we encounter the first signs of last night’s storm fronts where in dips in the main road we find water covering up to half the roadway . The table drains are full and the road verge looks very spongy indeed, thankfully this is an excellent sealed road recently upgraded so no need to try our luck in the mud as road-trains rush past occasionally.
Finally in Mount Magnet and, and the streets are deserted, crikey, it’s Saturday afternoon again? Nope, just a break in the traffic along the Great Northern H’way giving us that impression. A call to the Info Centre to collect brochures and tips  on the local attractions leaves us a tad despondent as the storms here were severe and the trails and roads we intended to travel are all closed for at least a week! We head to the MM Caravan Park, chase down the management and are soon settled in, along with 2 other couples, this isn’t peak season, all the gold prospectors have departed.
The day is warm, the sky is clear and with a few hours before Happy Hour we take a walk around town, which took half an hour! We had intended to stay here a couple of days, however, there seems to be a limit to activities so a stopover it is!
