Santa Marta, Colombia

SeaTac, Washington, United States
Docked at a coal wharf which was a bit of a change. Only wharf big enough for us. We had our own Road Scholar-trained guide, Carlos, who spoke amazing English and gave us a great tour of this oldest city in South America. We visited the area where Simon Bolivar died, including the church where his remains were once placed.

Interesting side note about the Miss Universe pageant last year when Miss Colombia was initially announced as the winner and then retracted . Colombians revere their beauty queens second only to the president of Colombia. They are present at every event, minor and major, throughout the year. The Miss Universe moderator was hung in effigy several times.

It has been difficult getting wifi so I'm still getting a handle on uploading pics. Bear with me, please.

Sounds like you are underway. Yes, I know why the Brazilians speak Portuguese instead of Spanish. The Pope was quite political even in those days. We have looked at Columbia, but haven't decided if we want to land there. I am trying to co-ordinate teaching English with location. The problem being if you teach small children they really need more than just a month or two with a teacher. So I am trying to stick with business English and adults.

Julie Julie Julie, your blog reads quite Rick Stevensish. ;-) We've known each other for just a short time, but long enough for me to know that your travel mates are going to enjoy the heck out of their fellow traveler. Received the blog for the first time, today, Jan 8th. Caught up, and anxious to share your exciting experience for the next several months. ps: fridge clean, roasted the left over veggies. :-)
