Kiev Metro, Cossack Village, Synagogue, Mosque

Kiev, Ukraine

This morning I was venturing out from the walking sights in the town centre and trying to reach the Cossack Village. You can book tours from $50 USD but I wanted to do it myself.

First I took the metro down the deep scary escalators the four stops to the central railway station.

Luckily it was so crowded there were people with me or I cant go up and down those long escalators by myself. At the railway station I wanted to scout where to get the airport bus for the day I leave but there was no sign of it. The place was a zoo of vendors and people.

Nor was there any sign of the tram line which I was supposed to take as my connection. I had to walk out from the train station towards the main street and I saw a tram so I followed it back to the depot.

Tram fare was 3 UH (.15 cents). You have to get off at the National Aeronautical University (NAU) stop. There is no signage but I'd scouted the route on google street maps.

Eventually I found the place behind the campus. Entrance is 50 UH ($2.50), I seemed to be the only person here and I was wondering where all the Eurovision tourists are at all the places I visit?

It was an outdoor park with lots of traditionally built buildings, most of which you cant enter.

I took the tram back to the metro and went two stops to reach the Synagogue by the Palace of Sports. I cant handle these deep escalators but it was the easiest way to get there and only 4 UH (.20 cents).

I was exploring the metro as I had to change after two stops to the transfer station for one more stop. Soviet metros are worth exploring as they were built as "Palaces of the People" and were built so deep as nuclear shelters.

The Synagogue was right at the metro entrance so easy to find. I had to go thru security and they asked if I was Israeli.

Back to the metro I went two more stops to try to reach the Mosque.

You have to goto Kontraktova Ploscha metro but the mosque is another 20 minute walk along a steep hill.

When I arrived everyone was very excited as I guess they dont get visitors. They spoke good English and wanted to know where I was from.

The complex was quite large and impressive. Now it was back to metro to get back to the hotel for my friends afternoon flight arrival.
